Bat found in Gloucester Township home tests positive for rabies

A bat removed from a home in the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township has tested positive for rabies, according to a Camden County press release. The bat was caught in the house Sept. 30.

A private wildlife removal service picked up the bat and handed it over to the Camden County Communicable Disease Unit, who sent it to Trenton for testing. The results confirming that the bat was rabid were released on Wednesday.

The press release said this is the second rabid bat identified in the area in the past two weeks.

Residents can do a few simple things to avoid exposing their families and pets to rabies. Camden County officials encourage citizens to keep their pets under close supervision with up-to-date vaccinations, and to keep a safe distance from wild animals.
